In the early 1980's, owner Mike O'Sullivan began building a home in an area of
Montrose that had a seasonal high water table and needed a large quantity of
fill dirt. Rather than purchasing the dirt, they decided to dig a pond to obtain
the needed fill.
Unfortunately the fill was not a good soil for growing the plants and they ended
up with difficult growing conditions, ranging from dry sandy soil to wet heavy
clay. They experimented with a wide variety of plants to determine which ones
would grow best in such difficult situations.
Having an interest in growing plants they decided to start raising and selling
"easy to grow plants in hard to grow places." Hence the beginning of their
nursery and the name Easy Growin'.
After several seasons they realized that the greatest demand for plants was in
the area of bog and aquatic. They then decided to concentrate on plants for
water gardens and dug two more ponds on their 40 acre parcel of land.
As the popularity of water gardening increased, the news of their nursery
spread and many other nurseries contacted Easy Growin' to supply them with
aquatic plants. Their business continued to grow and in 1998 they decided to
expand and began construction of a business building and greenhouse.
Easy Growin' now has several seasonal employees and not only supplies
plants to both the wholesale and retail market, but has a retail sales area that
provides customers with a variety of pond supplies and novelties for the water
gardening enthusiasts.
Easy Growin also has a program that provides free plants to non-profit schools
and other organizations in late summer, early fall.
